In a recent late-night television appearance, Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris joined Stephen Colbert for a candid chat that blended humor with serious political issues. The Vice President kicked off the segment by cracking open a can of Miller High Life, a distinctive choice that clearly sets her apart from both President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump, who are known for abstaining from alcohol.
During their lively exchange at New York’s Ed Sullivan Theater, Harris didn’t shy away from addressing Trump, especially in light of reports that he sent Covid testing kits to Vladimir Putin while American citizens were struggling to access them. “He thinks, well, that’s his friend,” Harris remarked sharply. “What about the American people? They should be your first friend.”
This late-night appearance was part of Harris’s media tour, having also participated in interviews on platforms like CBS’s “60 Minutes,” the podcast “Call Her Daddy,” and the daytime favorite “The View.” Colbert pointed out that this election is being termed the “vibe election,” suggesting that voters are looking for candidates they feel comfortable with—like someone they’d want to share a beer with.
“One thing I’ll say,” he quipped while raising his can, “is that it’s all about the vibe.” Harris chuckled and reminisced about her last beer, saying, “OK, the last time I had beer was at a baseball game with Doug. Cheers!”
As the conversation deepened, they tackled more significant topics, such as the recent Hamas attack on Israel. Harris stressed the need for a ceasefire and a hostage deal to be established as quickly as possible. “This war has got to end. It has to end,” she declared, emphasizing the urgency for resolution and underscoring that any progress toward a ceasefire is “meaningless” until a deal is in place.
Colbert then brought up new claims from journalist Bob Woodward’s latest book, which alleges that Trump had multiple private conversations with Putin and sent him Covid test kits early in the pandemic. Harris swiftly expressed her disapproval: “He openly admires dictators and authoritarians. He has said he wants to be a dictator on day one if he were reelected.”
She continued, “I ask everyone here and everyone watching: do you remember what those days were like? How many people were scrambling to get tests?” Her frustration grew as she recounted the daily deaths during the pandemic’s peak, lamenting, “And this man is giving Covid test kits to Vladimir Putin? Think about what this means…”
Colbert also took the opportunity to jokingly reference a now-iconic image of Harris from the presidential debate, where she displayed a less-than-impressed expression. When asked what was going through her mind at that moment, she humorously responded, “It’s family TV, right? It starts with a W, there’s a letter between it, then the last letter’s F,” eliciting laughter from the audience.
Finally, when the topic shifted to Trump’s denial of losing the 2020 election, Harris shot back, “You know, when you lost millions of jobs, you lost manufacturing, you lost automotive plants, you lost the election. What does that make you? A loser.” Her light-hearted yet candid remark resonated as Colbert nodded in agreement, reminding viewers, “It’s accurate.”
As their playful banter came to a close, Harris grinned and said, “This is what happens when I drink beer!”
