Recently, a man in his seventies was arrested for armed robbery at the TD Bank located at 4th Avenue and 39th Street in Brooklyn’s Sunset Park. The suspect, Joseph Jean-Louis, allegedly entered the bank around 9 a.m. on October 4th, brandishing a weapon and threatening employees before making off with $500 in cash.
According to authorities, one hour later, police used a tracking device embedded in the stolen bills to locate Jean-Louis at the New Kim Tuong Restaurant on Chrystie Street, near Hester Street in Manhattan’s Chinatown. Officers arrived just as he was finishing his meal and preparing to leave. At the time of his arrest, he was dressed in a gray top and blue pants, and no weapon was found on him.
During the arrest, Jean-Louis reportedly insisted that the cash he possessed was not stolen, repeatedly claiming it was part of his “social security benefits.” He also mentioned that he had recently obtained a loan of $50,000 from the bank. He is scheduled to appear in court in Brooklyn on Saturday, October 12th.
This isn’t Jean-Louis’s first run-in with the law. He was convicted of attempted robbery last year and sentenced to a year in prison. He was released from Elmira Correctional Facility in July and was on parole until February of next year. Now, he faces charges that include robbery, grand larceny, criminal possession of stolen property, and making threats. Prior to this incident, he had been staying at a shelter in Kips Bay.
