On October 17, the Ministry of Natural Resources reported that a celebration marking the 40th anniversary of China’s membership in the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR) took place recently in Qingdao.

Established in 1957, SCOR is one of the oldest and largest international organizations in ocean science, holding significant academic influence. It also serves as the scientific advisory body to the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO. China became a member of SCOR in 1984.

The anniversary event included discussions that reflected on the past four decades of China’s involvement with SCOR in international collaboration within ocean research, highlighting the pivotal role it has played in advancing China’s marine scientific development and facilitating groundbreaking research achievements. A tribute segment honored the contributions of the pioneering marine scientists who played crucial roles in China’s accession to SCOR and the subsequent development of ocean science in China.

Looking forward, Chinese SCOR aims to leverage this 40th anniversary as an opportunity to unify ocean science professionals in the country. It will enhance communication and collaboration between China’s ocean scientific community and SCOR internationally. The intent is to inspire generations of ocean scientists to pursue innovation and uphold the spirit of exploration in ocean science, thereby contributing significantly to the flourishing of China’s marine scientific endeavors and the global advancement of ocean science.

The event saw participation from over 100 representatives, including officials from the Ministry of Natural Resources, the National Natural Science Foundation, the SCOR Executive Committee, Chinese SCOR, and associated research institutions and universities, as well as representatives from major international ocean collaboration programs.

During his address, Wu Jun, Deputy Director of the International Cooperation Department of the Ministry of Natural Resources, highlighted SCOR’s irreplaceable leadership role in coordinating and promoting international ocean science and innovation. He noted that the establishment of Chinese SCOR 40 years ago marked a significant milestone in China’s entry onto the international ocean technology stage. Moving forward, Chinese SCOR will continue to focus on deepening open cooperation in marine technology, expanding its global collaborative network, and actively engaging in global ocean governance to foster a shared future for humanity through ocean technology innovation.
