As China marks its 75th anniversary, our reporter spoke with several overseas Chinese individuals who shared their reflections on the nation’s remarkable growth, along with their aspirations for the country’s future and the well-being of its citizens.
“Seventy-five years ago, I was just a high school student, witnessing the founding of the People’s Republic of China right in Tiananmen Square,” recounted Zhang Sujiu, a respected Chinese American leader. “Throughout these decades, I’ve witnessed firsthand the extraordinary transformation of our country, evolving from a position of strength to prosperity and ultimate strength. Comprehensive poverty alleviation has ensured that everyone has access to food and clothing, while our technological advances allow us to reach for the stars and explore the depths of the oceans.”
Zhou Jun, president of the Nigeria Chinese Women’s Association, highlighted the remarkable achievements China has made in areas such as manned space missions and lunar exploration. “These breakthroughs showcase China’s hardcore technological capabilities, which fill our overseas Chinese community with immense pride.”
“In tandem with China’s growing influence on the global stage, the status of overseas Chinese has also significantly improved,” observed Yin Chuping, honorary president of the Brazil China Peaceful Unification Promotion Association. “I’ve seen the phrase ‘a strong country and thriving overseas Chinese’ come to life. There was a time when many locals didn’t recognize the distinction of Chinese people, often confusing us with Japanese or Koreans. Today, the influence and status of the Chinese community are widely acknowledged and respected.”
Wu Hao, Secretary-General of the Russia China Peaceful Unification Promotion Association, underscored the dedication of overseas Chinese to opposing “Taiwan independence” and their commitment to enhancing the welfare of their compatriots. He affirmed his continued support for cross-strait exchanges to facilitate peaceful unification.
Ren Chuan Gong, Chairman of Australian Chinese Television Media, reflected on China’s substantial economic growth and increasing international standing over the past 75 years. He pointed out the successful Third Plenary Session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, which has created a comprehensive roadmap for advancing reforms and modernization. Ren believes that China’s openness and quality development present unprecedented opportunities for overseas Chinese.
Lin Chuqin, Chairman of the Thai Chinese Chamber of Commerce, emphasized that China’s development illustrates that modernization doesn’t mean Westernization. “China’s unique modernization path opens up new possibilities for developing nations, and overseas Chinese can leverage their resources and connections to actively participate in this journey.”
“China is not only focused on its own development but is also engaging with the world in a mutually beneficial manner,” stated Han Dongqi, Secretary-General of the Tajikistan Chinese Association. “The high-quality advancement of the ‘Belt and Road’ initiative is establishing numerous ‘heart-to-heart bridges’ and ‘prosperity ports,’ injecting new vitality into global connectivity and progress.”
Chen Jianxin, President of the Spanish Chinese Association, shared how China’s development has paved the way for overseas Chinese. “In my hometown of Qingtian, we’ve created a green window service for overseas Chinese, making it easy for them to manage family visits and residency permits efficiently, often completed in just a day. There’s also a simplified process for business registration upon returning home, which dramatically reduces processing times.”
Yan An, President of the Japanese Chinese Language Education Association, pointed out the growing enthusiasm for Chinese culture abroad. “Interest in learning Chinese is surging in various countries. In Japan, high school and university students are keen to learn the language, and fluency in Chinese is increasingly seen as a valuable asset for job seekers. More young people of Chinese descent are proud to speak Chinese and embrace their cultural heritage.”
Professor Sun Dawen from University College Dublin reflected on the pride felt by overseas Chinese as they consider the historical transformations in China at this significant milestone. “China’s rise provides a strong foundation for expatriates, and while the achievements of the new China have been substantial, I believe the future holds even greater promise. I hope for our motherland’s continued prosperity and for its people to enjoy lasting peace and well-being.”
