In a recent interview, we learned about the historic Malibu beachfront property affectionately known as the “Wave House.” This architectural gem, designed by passionate surfer and architect Harry Gesner in the early 1960s, has just sold for $29.5 million after being on the market for over a year, initially listed at nearly $49.5 million. The new owners are none other than supermodel Karlie Kloss and her billionaire husband.
According to sources from The Wall Street Journal, the bidding for this unique property came down to two main contenders: Joshua Kushner, the brother of Jared Kushner, who is a close associate of former President Trump, and the couple — Karlie and Joshua. Originally owned by Mo Ostin, the late executive from Warner Bros. Records, this remarkable residence hit the market back in June 2023. After a series of price reductions, it finally sold at a notable discount.
The “Wave House” was an ambitious vision of the self-taught mid-century architect Harry Gesner, designed to reflect the spirit of “raging waves.” Elevated on stilts above the beach, this mid-century modern masterpiece offers breathtaking ocean views. Nestled on 0.7 acres in a tranquil cove, the home is infused with oceanic inspiration, from its three circular terraces echoing the curves of waves to the handcrafted copper shingles that mimic the scales of fish on the roof. A fascinating detail is that, viewed from above, the structure resembles a graceful sea turtle.
Rumor has it that Gesner devoted two days to floating on a surfboard to refine his design, with whispers suggesting that the initial sketches were even drawn on his balsa wood surfboard. Zen Gesner, the architect’s son, shared insights with the media during the property’s initial listing, revealing that his father aimed for the house to “look like a wave reaching its strongest peak.” He elaborated, “When you’re surfing or fishing and turn back to the shore, you see this extraordinarily organic building, like a giant wave crashing toward the ocean.”
Inside, the home spans over 6,400 square feet, boasting six bedrooms and eight bathrooms. The interior features bleached hardwood floors, white-painted beam ceilings, and an abundance of glass walls that invite natural light. Additional highlights include three circular terraces and a detached garage with guest quarters. This two-story residence has made appearances in various advertising campaigns and even the 2019 film “Yesterday,” and it once served as a home for British pop superstar Rod Stewart.
On the main level, expansive oceanfront living areas provide stunning vistas, with one area showcasing a grand fireplace, and a master suite inspired by seashells, complete with a hot tub and sauna. The upper level runs the full width of the property, offering five bedrooms, each with spectacular ocean views through large windows.
