On October 27, images were released by the office of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, showing him addressing a crowd in Tehran. This comes in the wake of Israel’s retaliatory strikes against multiple Iranian military targets early on the 26th. According to reports from the Iranian news agency IRNA, Khamenei stated that it is up to Iranian officials to determine the best way to demonstrate Iran’s strength to Israel.
Khamenei emphasized that the “atrocities committed by Israel two nights ago should neither be downplayed nor exaggerated,” and he urged officials to make decisions that serve the best interests of the Iranian people and the nation in how to showcase their power.
He described the Israeli military’s recent attack as a “miscalculation.” Following the nighttime strikes, Iranian officials and media downplayed the assaults, claiming that only limited damage was sustained by some radar systems and underscoring Iran’s defensive capabilities, all while refraining from promising an immediate retaliation. Reports indicate that at least four Iranian military personnel were killed in the attacks, and Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has offered condolences to the deceased.
Israeli military sources indicated that several aircraft had completed three waves of airstrikes before dawn on the 26th, targeting facilities near Tehran as well as missile factories in western Iran. The Israeli military has cautioned Iran against any retaliatory actions.
