On October 22, the Israel Defense Forces confirmed that Hashem Safieddine, who was seen as a successor to the late Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, had died in an airstrike on October 4 in the southern suburbs of Beirut.
According to the Israeli military, the strike targeted a Hezbollah underground intelligence headquarters in the region, resulting in the deaths of Safieddine, Hezbollah’s intelligence chief Ali Hussein Hazima, along with approximately 25 other members, including several high-ranking commanders.
Since the airstrike, there had been a communication blackout from Safieddine until the Israeli forces announced his death. As of now, Hezbollah has yet to officially comment on the news.
Safieddine was designated a terrorist by the U.S. State Department in 2017. He was Nasrallah’s cousin and, like Nasrallah, was known to wear a black turban, indicating his lineage as a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad.
