On October 22, 2023, in Beijing, the National Energy Administration of China revealed some significant data regarding green power certificates, which serve as electronic “identifiers” for renewable energy. These certificates are the sole proof of both the production and consumption of renewable energy in the country. As of the end of September 2024, a total of approximately 2.319 billion green certificates have been issued nationwide.

Breaking it down by source, wind power accounted for 793 million certificates, making up 34.19%; solar power contributed 484 million certificates or 20.86%; conventional hydroelectric power issued 885 million certificates, representing 38.16%; biomass energy provided 156 million certificates, totaling 6.71%; and other renewable energy sources added 1.9 million certificates, which is just 0.08%.

In September 2024 alone, the National Energy Administration issued 477 million green certificates. Of these, wind power represented 111 million certificates, or 23.17%; solar power had 70.44 million certificates, comprising 14.76%; conventional hydroelectric power issued 256 million certificates, making up 53.66%; biomass contributed 39.52 million certificates, accounting for 8.28%; and other renewable energy sources totaled 620,000 certificates, or 0.13%.

Additionally, the data disclosed on the same day revealed that in September 2024, a total of 4.487 million green certificates were traded nationwide. Among these, 2.068 million were traded alongside green electricity. By the end of September 2024, the cumulative total of traded green certificates reached 35.9 million, with 18.5 million of these traded alongside green electricity.
