In a groundbreaking moment for basketball, Bronny James alongside his father, LeBron James, made history during the NBA season opener on Tuesday night against the Minnesota Timberwolves. As reported by ESPN, this match marked the first time a father-son duo has ever played together in an NBA game.

Looking ahead, Bronny will continue to share the court with his legendary father during the Los Angeles Lakers’ upcoming road trip. However, there are plans for him to alternate between the Lakers’ active roster and the South Bay G League affiliate. After playing at home on Friday and Saturday, the Lakers will embark on a five-game road stretch starting on October 28 at the Phoenix Suns and concluding in Memphis on November 6, with stops in Cleveland, Toronto, and Detroit.

Perhaps the most anticipated game will be Wednesday’s matchup against the Cavaliers, which serves as a sort of homecoming for LeBron. A native of Akron, Ohio, he was drafted first overall by Cleveland in 2003 and spent the initial seven years of his career there, adding another four seasons later on. Bronny, born in October 2004, grew up during his father’s impressive tenure in Cleveland.

Both LeBron and Lakers head coach JJ Redick are on the same page regarding Bronny’s development. They expect him to grow as a basketball player, whether it’s with the Lakers or the G League team. “His job is to put the work in and get better, just like the rest of us,” LeBron shared during the media day in September. “We want to hold him accountable, and he’s going to hold us accountable as well. If we all do that, we all improve because we’re one team.”

Coach Redick has also emphasized the importance of player development, looking to Bronny as a crucial element of their program. “For us, prioritizing player development, we view Bronny as a case study,” Redick explained in July. “He has a strong base level of feel, athleticism, and skills like shooting and passing. As we develop our player development program, he’ll have a tremendous opportunity to become an excellent NBA player.”

In his first game, Bronny took to the floor for three minutes during the season opener, though he did not score. In preparation for this moment, he averaged 16.2 minutes and 4.2 points per game across six preseason appearances.
