In a recent interview with a Hamas official, it was revealed that the organization plans to elect a new leader in March of next year. Due to security concerns, there may be a decision to keep the identity of the new leader confidential.
This announcement comes on the heels of Israel’s declaration that Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar has been killed in the Gaza Strip, a claim that Hamas has also confirmed.
According to the report, Hamas will manage their affairs through a committee of five members until the new leader is elected. The official, speaking to the BBC, indicated that the decision to potentially keep the new leader’s identity secret is driven by security considerations.
Historically, after previous leaders like Sheikh Ahmad Yassin and Abdel Aziz al-Rantisi were assassinated by Israel, Hamas opted to maintain confidentiality regarding the identities of its new leaders.
