On October 25, 2023, the “Silk Road Treasures: Symphony of Civilizations” Dunhuang Grottoes Art Exhibition was officially inaugurated at the Chinese Cultural Center in Paris. This exhibition was co-hosted by the Center for International Cultural Exchange, the Chinese Cultural Center in Paris, the Dunhuang Research Academy, and the China Dunhuang Grottoes Protection Research Foundation, while Beijing Guowen Cultural Development Co., Ltd. managed the organization. Approximately 100 attendees were present for the opening ceremony, including representatives from the World Tourism Organization, local scholars of Dunhuang culture, officials from Paris’s cultural tourism department, and leaders of cultural enterprises.

Designed to celebrate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and France, the exhibition features a replica of Cave 285 from Dunhuang, offering an immersive experience of the grotto art and its historical context for overseas visitors. Innovative digital experiences such as the “Exploring Dunhuang” VR interaction and the Digital Cave of Scriptures allow attendees to traverse a millennium while engaging with the intricate details of the murals. Cultural lectures and interactive exhibits aim to present the richness and vibrancy of Dunhuang art in diverse forms.

In his opening remarks, Liu Hongge, Director of the Chinese Cultural Center in Paris, expressed that the Dunhuang Grottoes Art Exhibition would serve as a time-traveling journey and a window into the ancient charm of Chinese culture. He emphasized the hope that this exhibition would add new highlights to cultural exchanges between China and France and foster deeper dialogues between the peoples of the two nations in culture, art, and spirit. “We firmly believe that culture is the bridge that connects hearts and transcends borders. Through our shared passion for Dunhuang art, we can better understand each other, draw closer together, and deepen our friendship,” he stated.

Zhang Xiaogang, Vice President of the Dunhuang Research Academy, highlighted the deep-rooted connections between the Academy and France. “Over the years, we have engaged in extensive exchanges and cooperation in the fields of cultural relic preservation and academic research, working together to promote the protection and inheritance of world cultural heritage. Today, we reunite to bring the treasures of Dunhuang grotto art to Paris, allowing the French public to experience the profound richness of Chinese civilization up close.” The exhibition is divided into five sections, each aiming to showcase the allure of Dunhuang culture comprehensively and in depth.

During the opening ceremony, a promotional video titled “Eternal Dunhuang” was screened, vividly presenting the beautiful natural landscapes and rich historical culture of Dunhuang to local audiences. The festivities also featured captivating Dunhuang dance performances and traditional music by local artists, creating a lively atmosphere. The recreated Cave 285 drew many onlookers who stopped to listen to guide explanations. In the interactive area, attendees eagerly participated in hand-drawn graffiti and stamp-making, engaging personally with the stories of Dunhuang.

Additionally, the event showcased “Hello! China” – the 2024 Silk Road Themed Tourism Overseas Promotion Season, presenting guests with stunning natural vistas and profound cultural heritage from the Silk Road regions.
